About the Founder

Nechumah Getz

As a woman in midlife it feels like I’m constantly being told that what I need to live a long, healthy life can be found in diets, hormone treatments, bottles and jars.  But do you know what the number one predictor of health and longevity is? It’s not diet. And it’s certainly not Botox. It’s connection. I’m Nechumah Getz, the founder of Better Outside Together, and I've spent the past few years learning what community and connection actually do for you, especially at this stage in my life.

I have always loved hiking, and in my late forties I decided to try backpacking and joined an REI trip to learn how. It was hard and exhilarating at the same time. Then a month later, the pandemic hit. Without meaning to, I found myself building a small community around movement and the outdoors. I organized groups of women who went on weekly hikes. I even lead backpacking trips for those groups. Soon those weekly hikes become something we all counted on.  There is something about moving your body in fresh air alongside other women that opens up the kind of conversations that are hard to have anywhere else.

Then, without warning, that community was gone. In a short span, I had to relocate due to my husband's job in the Navy. Shortly after that, I was laid off from my role as COO. But losing community in midlife is different. There's no school pickup, no office culture rebuilding it for you. The community I had managed to create for myself was gone.

Despite all of that, midlife had given me something I didn’t have before: the confidence to build something of my own. So I did it again, but this time, it wasn’t just a happy accident. I combined my love for hiking and connection with my 25 years of leadership and operational experience, and built Better Outside Together: a community for women in midlife in the DC area who want to build connection, strength, and shared experiences in nature. Our calendar is filled with a regular schedule of planned hikes, so you can make exercise and connection a consistent part of your routine. Between the fresh air, the scenery, and the conversation, you will want to keep coming back. I’m a big believer that midlife is not the end of something. It is the beginning of something better. Stop looking for youth in a bottle. It is waiting for you outside, with the right people beside you.

Personal Fun Fact

I learned to rock climb at 50 and it turns out I love it. If that tells you anything about how I feel about midlife, you're in the right place.

Better Outside Together is for women 40+ who are ready to move their bodies, build real friendships, and make the most of this chapter. You don't have to do this alone.
