In Person Training
Backpacking Journey
Whether this is your first time or you've been out there before, some experiences are just better with other women beside you.
This is a guided, small-group backpacking journey for women in midlife who have always wanted to do this but weren't sure where to start, and for women who have done it before but don't want to do it alone.
In the eight weeks leading up to the trip, you'll have unlimited access to weekly hikes with guidance on how to train so you show up feeling ready.
A gear consultation helps you figure out exactly what you need and how to pack it, so you're not second-guessing yourself on day one.
The journey itself is three days and two nights in the backcountry, led by a certified wilderness first responder, with a small group of women who get it.

FAQ
-
Hikes are led by me, Nechumah, or a personally vetted guide. I don't hand this off to just anyone. Each guide is an experienced hiker who knows how to lead a group, hold a conversation, and create the kind of environment where women feel comfortable showing up as they are. I hold a Wilderness First Responder certification, and all guides leading backpacking journeys hold the same.
-
We hike rain or shine. A little weather is part of the experience and we come prepared. That said, if conditions are genuinely unsafe, we will cancel or modify the hike and you will be notified in advance. Please note that hikes are non-refundable unless we make that call.
-
I hold a Wilderness First Responder certification, and every backpacking journey will be led by at least one guide who holds the same. A WFR is one of the highest levels of outdoor emergency training available. It means your guide knows how to assess and respond to medical emergencies in remote settings where help isn't immediately available. It's not a basic first aid certificate. It's comprehensive training that covers everything from injuries and illness to environmental emergencies. You can head into the backcountry knowing someone who knows what to do is with you.

Not at all. This is not a performance-driven hiking club. The pace, structure, and culture are designed for women in midlife, not for competition. You don't have to prove anything out here. That said, you will move your body and feel it. These are real hikes that will challenge you physically and leave you feeling like you did something. You just won't have to do it alone.

For a day hike, come dressed in layers appropriate for the weather and wear hiking boots. Bring a day pack with water, a snack, sunscreen, and bug spray and you'll be set. If you have questions about gear or aren't sure what to wear, just reach out at ngetz@betteroutsidetogether.com. If you are registered for the backpacking journey, a detailed packing list will be sent to you separately.

As a small business, we are generally not able to offer refunds. That said, life happens. If you are dealing with an injury, a move, or something else you'd like to discuss, reach out at ngetz@betteroutsidetogether.com and we will do our best to find something that works for both of us.

Intentionally small. Hikes in Rock Creek National Park and Great Falls National Park are capped at 15 people including guides. All other hikes are kept small by design. Small enough that real conversation happens, no one gets lost in a crowd, and you actually get to know the women you're hiking with.

Yes. Several membership options include a free guest pass and there are bring-a-friend options available. Some of the best hikes happen when you show up with someone you already know and leave with someone new.
